To what extent does the UK support its citizens fighting in Ukraine?

"I do support that. Of course that is something that people can make their own decisions about."

FULL INTERVIEW - CAPTURED UK MERCENARY AIDEN ASLIN (AKA COSSACK GUNDI) | GRAHAM PHILLIPS

Why are we being presented with bizarre characterisations of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine? Aiden Aslin (above) describes himself as a mercenary in an interview he requested with Graham Phillips. He also requested an interview with the BBC after his capture by Russian forces, having been allowed to use a phone to call a BBC producer.

Despite his own description, he is not described as a mercenary in the British press.

CAPTURED British hero Aiden Aslin will not be treated as a Prisoner of War, Russia warned last night. Brave Aiden, 28, surrendered after his unit ran out of food and ammunition in the besieged city…

But Russia vowed to ignore the Geneva Convention on PoWs and insists he is "a mercenary".

The International Committee of the Red Cross said: "POWs must be treated with dignity and are absolutely protected against ill-treatment and exposure to public curiosity including images circulating publicly on social media."

So if Aslin is a mercenary and he describes himself as one, the Geneva Convention does not apply and he does not have the rights of a Prisoner of War. Therefore, Russia is not “ignoring the Geneva Convention on PoWs”.

Why are the British citizens who are voluntarily fighting in Ukraine not being described as “mercenaries” in the British press?

Why did the UK Foreign Secretary say that she supported British citizens fighting in Ukraine when to do so is at odds with UK and International Law?

February 27, 2022:

Foreign secretary Liz Truss has said she would “absolutely” support individual Brits going to fight Russian forces in Ukraine, insisting: “People can make their own decisions”.

…Asked whether she would support the call, Ms Truss told the BBC’s Sunday Morning programme: “I do support that. Of course that is something that people can make their own decisions about.

“The people of Ukraine are fighting for freedom and democracy — not just for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe because that is what president Putin is challenging”.

Liz Truss says she ‘absolutely’ supports individual Brits going to fight in Ukraine

There have been questions about the legality of Britons going abroad to fight in previous foreign conflicts.

In 2014, the Crown Prosecution Service warned that UK nationals who went to fight in the Syrian civil war could be committing an offence, even if they joined the rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar Assad.

Having said she supported Britons going to fight, will she or the British Government support any Britons fighting as mercenaries in Ukraine?

Both Sean Pinner and Aiden Aslin are being charged by the authorities in the DPR of crimes, the maximum penalty for which is death.

What does the above say about the quality of Liz Truss’ support, and about her knowledge of the legality of British citizens engaging in combat in foreign nations?
